Art in America, Jan, 1998 by David Ebony
Daytime sales of contemporary art at both houses also produced some notable results. Highlights at Sotheby's included Nicholas de Stael's 1954 painting Syracuse Beach, which brought $220,500, just above its high estimate; Juan Munoz's bronze From One to Five -- Two (1991), sold for $140,000 (est. $60,000-80,000), an auction record for the artist; and Romare Bearden's large collage Sunday Morning Breakfast (1967), which went for $79,500.
At Christie's, Mike Kelley's photo work Craft Morphology Flow Chart (1991), brought $96,000 (est. $60,000-80,000), a new auction record for the artist. A bright yellow Kenneth Noland stripe painting Twin Plain II (1969), from the collection of Irwin and Bertha Green, shot past its $15,000 high estimate to sell for $52,900, and Of This Time, Of That Place, a 1956 Jan Muller painting from the estate of John and Marion Shea, went for $50,600 (est. $25,000-35,000).
