Student Alcohol Use Down - Brief Article

Camping Magazine, May, 2000

Alcohol consumption among college freshmen is on a downward trend, a study conducted by the University of California at Los Angeles finds. Just over half of college freshmen said they frequently consumed alcohol in the last year compared with 75.2 percent of students in 1981.

Statistics from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism support this trend. A study of alcohol use by high school seniors finds that student alcohol consumption has been on a downward trend since 1975. In 1975, 68.2 percent of high school seniors reported drinking in the past month, compared with just 52.7 percent in 1997.
