A historical point of view

Camping Magazine, Sept-Oct, 2003 by S. Hamill Horne

I enjoyed your article, "Children's Camping in the Adirondacks, "in the July/August 2003 issue. The Adirondack camps seem to have preserved the essence of true camping: outdoor living with others the same age, away from home.

At the beginning of the article, you cite Ernest Balch's Chocurua as the first in the camp movement, but you do not go on to its successors: Camps Asquam and Pasquaney who were near each other and interwoven with similar philosophies. Chocorua and Asquam were short lived but Pasquaney is having its 109th season this summer!

It was at Pasquaney that camp terms were introduced such as: "counselor"; "director"; "bugle calls"; and the "camp uniform." I realize that Pasquaney is not in the Adirondacks, but it should not be slighted in camp history.
