Computer Access Increases Nationwide - TRENDS - Cnsus Bureau report - Brief Article - Statistical Data Included

Nine out of ten school-age children (ages six to seventeen) had access to a computer in 2000, according to a recent Census Bureau release. The Census Bureau reports the following statistics for 2000, indicating the growth of computer access across the country:

* In August 2000, fifty-four million households, or 51 percent, had one or more computers.

* More than four out of five households with computers had at least one member using the Internet at home.

* Two-thirds of households with a school-age child had a computer with 53 percent having Internet access.

* E-mail is the most common Internet application at home, used by 88 percent of adults and 73 percent of children who are online.

* Nearly two-thirds (65 percent) of all children (ages three to seventeen) lived in a household with a computer, up from 55 percent in 1998.

* Computer use at school was nearly equal across various income, race, or ethnic groups than was access at home.

* About 77 percent of White, non-Hispanic children and 72 percent of Asian and Pacific Islander children lived in households with computers.

* Approximately 43 percent of African American children and 37 percent of Hispanic children lived in households with computers.
