Publisher's Note - Brief Article

USA Today (Society for the Advancement of Education), Nov, 1999

As the end of the millennium rapidly nears, we presented six of our regular columnists with the daunting challenge of picking the 20th century's 10 most significant developments, events, and/or people in their fields of expertise: national affairs, international affairs, economics, mass media, films, and sports.

Throughout the pages of this issue, you will find the result of their compiling lists, discarding entries, adding others, and ultimately boiling them down to what we have dubbed "The Top 10 for the 20th Century." (Or, in the case of one deviously ingenious columnist, top 20, as he split his choices into 10 developments and 10 events.)

The lists are completely subjective and only represent the opinions of the respective columnists. We hope you find them provocative and, if you do not agree with the selections, we would welcome your opinions concerning hits and misses. Should you care to take a crack at what at first may seem like an easy task, we would be interested in your alternative choices.
