Lack Of Opportunity Creates Turnover - reasons employees leave their jobs - Brief Article

USA Today (Society for the Advancement of Education), May, 2000

What causes most good employees to quit their jobs today? Forty-one percent of human resources and other executives polled in a nationwide survey developed by Robert Half International Inc., a staffing services firm specializing in the accounting, finance, and information technology fields, ranked limited advancement potential as the number-one factor in staff turnover. It was conducted by an independent research firm and includes responses from 150 executives with the nation's 1,000 largest companies.

"Companies that fail to promote from within or do not clearly communicate the advancement opportunities at their firms--particularly in a strong job market--will lose workers to businesses that do follow these practices," explains Max Messmer, chairman and CEO of Robert Half International. "Public recognition and praise are critical considerations as professionals today place greater importance on corporate culture and work environment than ever before."
