The Gender Public Advocacy Coalition

USA Today (Society for the Advancement of Education), Dec, 2004

The Gender Public Advocacy Coalition, Washington, D.C., is offering congratulations to pupils at Hastings (N.Y.) High School for raising awareness of stereotypes. Students came to class dressed in clothes typically associated with the other sex. The day, part of the annual "Spirit Week," was banned by school officials, but about two dozen individuals ignored the prohibition.

"Kids should be encouraged to be whoever they are." states youth program coordinator Kristin Effland. "We applaud them for finding a clever, upbeat way to explore society's strictures on gender. ..."
