Years ago, Rep. Nancy Pelosi was a high-profile advocate of human rights in China. She is from San Francisco; there are Chinese Americans there. Now she is Speaker Nancy Pelosi--exalted. And she has bigger fish to fry. At the beginning of the new administration, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton declared that human rights in China would be on the back burner, if there.

Speaker Pelosi is following suit. Recently she was in China to talk up global warming. The Associated Press had a headline that said, "Pelosi Dodges Human Rights on China Visit." Pelosi retorted, "Protecting the environment is a human-rights issue." Which will certainly be comforting news to Chinese democrats in dungeons and camps.
