The FBI arrested a father and his 22-year-old son when the latter admitted—after both had denied—that he had attended a jihadist training camp in Pakistan possibly run by al-Qaeda

National Review, July 4, 2005

The FBI arrested a father and his 22-year-old son when the latter admitted--after both had denied--that he had attended a jihadist training camp in Pakistan possibly run by al-Qaeda. After the arrest, three more members of the Lodi, Calif., Muslim community in which the father and son lived were detained, all for immigration violations.

The case draws attention to suspected Qaeda training camps in Pakistan, as well as to a possible network of Qaeda sympathizers in Lodi. The vigilance of law enforcement in investigating the suspected sleeper cell is encouraging. Less confidence-inspiring, however, is the fact that the now-arrested son was found on a commercial airplane, in flight, when his name was discovered to be on the no-fly list. Surely civilians everywhere would be safer if such characters were detained before they are allowed into the skies.
