The Duke lacrosse scandal is trailing off into a whimper
National Review, July 3, 2006
The Duke lacrosse scandal is trailing off into a whimper. The team's season was canceled after a stripper hired to perform at an off-campus party accused three players of rape, and D.A. Michael Nifong, in the midst of a heated campaign, quickly said the alleged assailants were undoubtedly guilty.
For those interested in the triumvirate of race, class, and gender, the story was a perfect storm: white, privileged Duke jocks assaulting a poor black woman. Only that does not seem to be the full story. DNA evidence proved nothing, and Duke's administration has issued an evenhanded report on the team, noting their exemplary record in matters of character and academics. Defense attorneys have produced more and more exculpatory evidence: time-stamped photographs, contradictory statements from the other stripper at the party, etc. Meanwhile, Nifong has gone silent. The sense that he has perpetrated a gross miscarriage of justice grows.
