The Misanthrope's Corner - Ninth Circuit's ruling on Pledge of Allegiance - Column - Brief Article

National Review, July 29, 2002 by Florence King

What to do? A greasy king being better than no king at all, the American royalist is tempted to suggest that all three faiths conduct a tripartite coronation, but this is fraught with danger. Americans are so terrified of leaving any religion out of the running that we would have to have an ecumenical coronation by representatives from every creed, oleaginous or not.

There is no telling where it would end, or if it would end except in the death of the monarch. By the time he was Born Again, Circumcised Again, held underwater, plunked down on a bed of nails, and forced to play with rattlesnakes, we would find that we had once again snatched self-defeat from the jaws of compromise.
