California, Here they Come : E Pluribus unum is losing to La Raza

National Review, August 11, 2003 by VIctor Davis Hanson

Is there still a chance that we might avoid the separatist nightmare of the Balkans? Perhaps. After all, we got into our present mess only during the last 30 years, and then only by doing almost everything wrong. Thus we need not do everything right, but simply return to what we used to do so well: insist that immigration be measured and legal, do more of our own unpleasant work, enforce all our laws, drop the ideology of "The Race," and envision us all as just ordinary individuals and Americans, not as specialized groups and separate races.

In the present climate we may find such time-honored solutions hurtful or simplistic, but they reflect a confidence in American culture-a confidence similar to that which prompted immigrants from Mexico and elsewhere to come here rather than us to go there. Let's make that act of faith.
