Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick just can't stay out of trouble

National Review, Sept 1, 2008

Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick just can't stay out of trouble. A day after serving a jail sentence for violating bond on a perjury case, he allegedly violated bond on an assault case. The former case arose from his testimony in a civil trial that he hadn't been intimate with his chief of staff, the latter from his alleged assault of two court officers trying to serve a subpoena to his friend.

His problems resonate far beyond his office: Kilpatrick's mother nearly lost her House seat in the Democratic primary, and some speculate his behavior could hurt Obama's chances in Michigan by skewing white voters' perceptions of black politicians. We trust that Michigan voters can tell the difference between Obama and the sexy-text-message-sending city leader. We're far more worried about the impact Kilpatrick and the circus sideshow he has created will have on his already-suffering city.
