AMERICA: Pluribus, and Unum

National Review, Jan 24, 2000 by Richard Brookhiser

Horses have disappeared from ordinary life, outside of racetracks and city police departments. The expectation that leaders will lead has gone, too. Yet they retain their power, even if they slap our backs; when an event ends, they leave in motorcades, with armor plate and tinted glass.

When the form is lost, the thing remains, and it becomes worse for the loss of the form. Buddyship is not just gross; it weakens, and lulls us, too.
