Appearing on Jay Leno's show, Huckabee got off what everybody said was a really good line, even a killer line. What he said was, "People are looking for a presidential candidate who reminds them more of the guy they work with rather than the guy that laid them off." He was alluding to Romney. According to a mature view, this is a very depressing line, its deplorable grammar aside. (Isn't Huck supposed to be silver-tongued?) It expresses a low populism, the kind that belongs in the Democratic party, if anywhere, not in the Republican. And are we now to campaign on the basis of looks? Okay, we'll play along: To us, Romney looks like a guy who can create jobs, create businesses, and create wealth--who can make the economy go, so that people like Mike Huckabee can spend their lives preachin', gettin' votes, taxin' folks, and demagoguin'. There are reasons to oppose Romney; resentment of his looks, well-being, and success is not one of them.
