Conrad Black was indicted on eleven counts of wire and mail fraud in connection with his management of Hollinger International, a media company that at one time owned the Chicago Sun-Times, the Jerusalem Post, and the Daily Telegraph

National Review, Dec 19, 2005

* Conrad Black was indicted on eleven counts of wire and mail fraud in connection with his management of Hollinger International, a media company that at one time owned the Chicago Sun-Times, the Jerusalem Post, and the Daily Telegraph (London). Lord Black is a friend of several editors of this magazine, and the muscular conservatism of his papers was congenial.

He has been spiritedly defended against the feds (the prosecutor is Patrick J. Fitzgerald, whose other trophy indictment is Scooter Libby) by former employee Mark Steyn, who believes any fair-minded jury will acquit him. We hope the jury is fair-minded; whatever the verdict, we know that a man of Conrad Black's savvy and energy will not be done with media and opinion-making.
