Kipling's line about "makin'mock o'uniforms that guard you while you sleep" was given ugly illustration at Seattle Central Community College on Inauguration Day

National Review, Feb 14, 2005

* Kipling's line about "makin'mock o'uniforms that guard you while you sleep" was given ugly illustration at Seattle Central Community College on Inauguration Day. To signal their disgust at the swearing-in of President George W. Bush, a gang of students at that school left their classes and marched through the halls, banging on doors to encourage others to join them.

So far, so routine. In one hallway, however, the mob came upon two army recruiters. They spent a happy ten minutes taunting the soldiers and tearing up their recruiting literature before permitting college security guards to escort them out. You don't have to be a fan of universal conscription--we are not--to be seized with a momentary desire to get those students out on a parade ground with full packs under the command of the men they jeered at. It would be even more satisfactory to picture them deployed in combat and under enemy fire, as those two recruiters may very well be next week or next month.
