A new production of Verdi's Masked Ball has been launched in Erfurt, Germany

National Review, May 5, 2008

A new production of Verdi's Masked Ball has been launched in Erfurt, Germany. The action takes place on the ruins of the World Trade Center. Old people in Mickey Mouse masks are naked. Other people are dressed as soldiers, or Uncle Sam, or Elvis. The Nazi salute is given. The director, Johann Kresnik, explained that "the naked stand for people without means, the victims of capitalism, the underclass, who don't have anything anymore." What does any of this have to do with A Masked Ball? Nothing.

What does it have to do with the sickness that is killing off Europe, and, along with it, our cultural heritage? A lot.
