On the eve of the Pennsylvania primary, the author and screenwriter Nora Ephron wrote in the Huffington Post: "This is an election about whether the people of Pennsylvania hate blacks more than they hate women. And when I say people, I don't mean people, I mean white men." So white men are damned either way: This brings to mind the old joke, which was no doubt familiar to Ephron's first husband (Dan Greenburg, author of How to Be a Jewish Mother), about the woman who gave her son two ties and, when he wore one of them, asked, "You didn't like the other tie?" Ephron goes on to say that the outcome of the general election will depend on how many members of her least favorite demographic group vote for McCain, and unfortunately "a lot of them will; white men cannot be relied on, as all of us know who have spent a lifetime dating them." While there's no accounting for Ephron's unsatisfactory love life, her words reflect an attitude all too common among Democrats. If they want to win in November, they'll have to do better than calling a big chunk of the electorate bitter, prejudiced, and unreliable.
