Weicker watch - Lowell P. Weicker

National Review, Oct 28, 1988

RING up three endorsements for the only senator larger than the state he represents. The homosexual newspaper Metroline "whole-heartedly supports" the re-election of Lowell Weicker becaus"no senator has taken such a strong stand in support of gay issues than [sic] has Weicker. . . . His opponent, Attorney General Joseph Lieberman, has not shown the same sensitivity to gay issues. As a liberal Democrat, he could be expected (possibly) to support some gay and AIDS-related issues, but it would not be the same as having Weicker as an active champion."

The Litchfield County Times writes that Weicker has been named the second annual recipient of the "Wayne Morse Political Integrity Award" for refusing "to degrade the integrity of political life by pandering to the simple-minded behavior often demanded by the press."

Connecticut deep-thinker J. C. Elan, of Rowayton, writes, in a postcard to the President of BuckPac (Buckleys for Lieberman): "I am a lifelong Democrat, but I can't wail to vote for Lowell Weicker-just because you don't want me to."

Meanwhile, BuckPac gets support from New York Daily News columnist Gail Collins: "Weicker has an

ego that spills out and sloshes all over the room. . . . The most famous fact about this contest so far is that William Buckley and all the other Connecticut Buckleys are supporting Lieberman, the liberal Democrat."
