Hot Town. - sound recording reviews

National Review, Oct 28, 1988 by Ralph de Toledano

Hot Town (BBC): This is one to cherish, for it gives us bands and music that were for the most part passed up on LPs. The 1920s precursors of big-band swing are collected here-orchestras memorialized until now only in the reminiscences of jazzmen. It was a joy for me because it restored Troy Floyd's "Dreamland Blues," a record I hoarded for years even though repeated playing had lacerated the grooves.

Bix Beiderbecke (BBC): Bix was a legend in his day, but even then he was all too often buried in the acres of instruments in such bands as Paul Whiteman's and Jean Goldkette's. Here he can be heard with the small recording bands which allowed his clear, clean cornet tones to call out.
