The silver foot kicks back - Texas gubernatorial race between Democrat Ann Richards and a strong Republican challenger, George W. Bush; includes other state races

National Review, Nov 7, 1994 by William Murchison

If the GOP picks up a few congressional seats--a very strong prospect--it won't necessarily be a white male thing. Among the strongest GOP contenders are minority-group members and women: Bobby Ortiz for El Paso Democrat Ron Coleman's seat and Jo Baylor, who is black, for the Austin seat being vacated by Jake Pickle (and held previously by Lyndon B. Johnson). The cantankerous Jack Brooks of Beaumont has a real contest with young Steve Stockman. Ed Harrison could knock off Dallas liberal Democrat Martin Frost.

And the formerly fearsome "Religious Right," which last summer we heard (mostly in the Eastern press) was clamping its iron grip on Texas? All's quiet on that particular front. The RR's allegedly formidable legions seem to have burrowed in and are playing politics the old-fashioned way--with hard work. Of course there could be some earnest prayer and supplication going on as well. If so, it seems to be paying off.
