Bentleys, by tradition, are sleek, purring dream machines. But there's nothing so smooth about Wes Bentley judging by his turn as an intense, saturnine high-school loner in this month's American Beauty. That he makes his character - a drug-dealing, voyeuristic videographer with a pathological love of order - one of the most sympathetic in the film says a lot about the Arkansas-raised Juilliard graduate's abilities.

Bentley could burn us up in the years ahead.
