PANTHERS Things Are Strange (Vice)
Brooklyn alt-rock agitators Panthers demonstrate real growth on their second full-length. A collection of angular rock songs characterized by strung-out guitars, panicky percussion, and tribal bass, the album takes heavy cues from Washington, D.C., hard-core hard-liners Fugazi. Songs like "Legally Tender" (in which vocalist Jayson Green informs listeners "America's getting stranger/I'm scared of Americans"), "We Are Louder," and "If You Were Young Once, Rage" make clear that Panthers are deeper than your average rock band, bringing a punkish sense of urgency to the fore.
