Interview, Dec, 2003 by Richard Dorment
(Warner Bros.)
Directed by Edward Zwick
Tom Cruise stars as an American Civil War veteran recruited by the Japanese Meiji emperor to help forge a modern army. Among his first duties is to wipe out the feudal samurai, whose ways he soon embraces. With Zwick (Glory, 1989) behind the camera, visceral battle sequences and lush landscapes promise a bloody, beautiful adventure.
