The Donnas. - Review - sound recording review

Interview, Jan-April, 2001 by Tom Lanham

The Donnas Turn 21 (Lookout!)

A lot of folks pigeonholed these four gals as pretty punk puppets a few years ago. But the teenaged Donnas quickly snipped their Svengali strings with 1999's self-penned Get Skintight, then got down to retro-rock business on this bratty, '70s-inspired follow-up. With Brett Anderson's sly sneer surfing smoothly across guitarist Allison Robertson's raw-meat rifts, they have, upon hitting their hormone-amok twenties, morphed into something dangerously close to a female AC/DC. Come-hither cuts like "Midnight Snack" and "40 Boys In 40 Nights" are just as bawdy as "Back In Black," and every bit as memorable.
