Etta James. - Review - sound recording review

Interview, Jan-April, 2001 by Vivien Goldman

Matriarch of the Blues (RCA)

The first talent spotted by vocal great Johnny Otis back in 1954, Etta James spent sixteen years at the mother lode R&B label, Chess. But of her many awards and achievements, perhaps the dearest is the musical dynasty she's founded. Her sons, drummer Donto, thirty-two, and bassist Sametto, twenty-three--both members of her touring band--produced this vibrant disc. They ensure this set pops from the speakers like you're right there, funking in a packed nightclub as Etta growls and slow burns through songs by Al Green, Bob Dylan, and the Stones.
