Hair We Go Again - heavy metal revival; Elton John discusses rock - Brief Article - Interview

Interview, April, 2000 by Julia Chaplin

I: This year is the first time you performed at the Grammys. What made you decide to do it?

EJ: Well, I am uncomfortable at these award things, but the reason I did it was because they gave me a Lifetime Achievement Award. They were very sweet and asked me if I would like to do it and I hemmed and hawed and at the end of it I thought, It would be very ungracious to say no, because America was the first place that ever started playing my records. It was the first place I became successful in. So I have a lot to thank America for, but a Lifetime Achievement Award? There is much more to come--more records to make, more shows to do, more art to collect, more photographs to see....
