Interview, May, 2000 by Ethan Smith
The Geometrid (Sub Pop)
Playing fey, Nick Drake--derived pop clearly left Belle and Sebastian ex-bassist Stuart David with an unscratched itch. Hence Looper, whose lo-fi break-beats and electronic bloopings are everything his day job wasn't. On Geometrid, Looper's second outing, David, together with wife Karn and fellow Glaswegians Ronnie Black and Scott Twynholm, pumps up the beats to new levels of funkiness. Still, the delicate melodies and narrative story-songs are as romantic and infectious as anything in the B&S songbook, while David's ear for songwriting detail keeps getting sharper.
