Interview, June, 2001 by Sarah Valdez
Essence (Lost Highway Records)
You could drown in Lucinda Williams' relentless rawness. Her sixth album offers lots of haggard, come-hithery vocals that dissolve into voracious groans. Self-abnegating, lovelorn lyrics reach for deep emotional lows, but Williams' subtle mix of bluegrass and country prevents her from sounding totally despondent. Perfect for a balmy night when the crickets are out.
