Stephen Sprouse: what's new in red, white & blue

Interview, July, 2002 by Joanna Jacovini

JOANNA JACOVINI: Hi, Stephen. This is Joanna.

STEPHEN SPROUSE: Hi, how are you?

JJ: I'm all right. So, I know that you've designed a special line of products for Target. How did you hook up with them?

SS: My friend, Sonia Kashuk, does a makeup line for them. She called me a year and a half ago and asked if I wanted to do something. I said, "Yeah, that sounds great. I like Target." Then she went to a creative meeting and mentioned me. They called me a month or two later.

JJ: They are fantastic at choosing great designers to work with.

SS: Their creativity is pretty cool. And they're nice.

JJ: How long will your line be in the stores?

SS: Well, it's a limited-run kind of thing designed especially for the Fourth of July, so it stays through the holiday.

JJ: And is everything red, white and blue?

SS: Well, the new red, white and blue. Because there's some yellow and turquoise, which looked cool with the red, white and blue.

JJ: How do you feel about designing a line like this?

SS: I feel good about it, especially after what's been going on this year. Plus, they let me make some really cool leans.

JJ: And that's not your only new project. You are also doing something with NASA.

SS: A few years ago I designed some clothes for them using their images. Now I'm doing a painting for them of the International Space Station, which they're in the midst of building.

JJ: Where?

SS: In outer space.

JJ: Oh. So are you going up for the opening?

SS: I don't know, I don't like to fly anymore.
