Interview, July, 2000 by Graham Fuller
Directed by Fina Torres
No less infectiously than in her hectic, day-glo Celestial Clockwork (1996), Torres takes on the messy, mystical romantic progress of a geographically displaced young woman. Here the filmmaker's protagonist is a talented Brazilian chef (Penelope Cruz), who insists on being on top when she makes love to her hubby (Banderas lookalike Murilo Benicio). He rebels against this rule by bedding another, so Cruz's character leaves for 'Frisco. A goddess intervenes, hexes are laid and lifted, but all one needs to know about this Almodovarian dessert is Cruz's radiant presence.
