DEFTONES. - Review - sound recording review

Interview, July, 2000 by Matt Diehl

White Pony (Maverick)

With the recent chart-ruling success of their "new metal" peers like Korn and Limp Bizkit, the Deftones could've easily expanded the rabid cult that devoured their past two albums. Instead of selling out to bass-slappin', testosterone-aggro cliches, however, Deftones take a different journey. While there's no shortage of interlocking sledgehammer guitars, White Pony evokes a spectral expansiveness that recalls Radiohead and Smashing Pumpkins more than crunch-by-numbers hard rock.
