Interview, August, 2000 by Graham Fuller
Directed by Nigel Cole
When genteel, middle-aged Grace (Brenda Blethyn) discovers that her late husband has bequeathed her a hefty mortgage on their Cornish manor house and a massive debt, her caretaker (played by cowriter Craig Ferguson) persuades her to grow a lucrative crop of marijuana in her hothouse; it's only a matter of time before she's trawling London's underworld for a buyer. Made in the same spirit as the Ealing comedies of the early '50s, this amiable English tale derives as much humor from its communal pub scenes and stoned old ladies as it does from its fish-out-of-water premise. Although unlikely to prove this year's Full Monty, it should bring a little high to the late summer box office.
