MORCHEEBA. - Review - sound recording review

Interview, August, 2000 by Evelyn McDonnell

Fragments of Freedom (London/Sire)

For Brit trip-hop vets Morcheeba, the sounds of freedom are the sounds of America: soul, hip-hop, calypso, disco--but not rock 'n' roll. Singer Skye, sounding like a typical electronica booster, declares r 'n' r "a thing of the past" on the Deee-Lite-esque "Love Sweet Love." Like disco isn't? Thankfully, the trio put their money where their samples are, giving guest spots to statesiders Biz Markie and Bahamadia. But all the hippie-chick sentiments, warbly synths, and Moroder-style strings make this album sound not like the pulse of the future but like too many echoes of the past.
