Interview, Sept, 2001
DIMITRI EHRLICH: So what are the hottest new records right now?
FREDERIC SANCHEZ: One of my new favorites is the Fischerspooner CD, Best Album Ever. It's got an electro music vibe--a little like new wave. It's on a German label called International DJ Gigolo Records. Fischerspooner is a band from New York and their music is a mix between Wire, the English group from the '80s, and, Depeche Mode. You can find a lot of influences in every song. And the look of the lead singer--everything about him is really amazing.
DE: What does he look like?
FS: A cross between a punk and a glam star. And there's another new 12-inch record by a DJ in London. It's called "Being Scrubbed.' And the B-side is called "I Wanna Dance With Numbers." The cover shows the Kraftwerk robot with, the head of Whitney Houston.
DE: [laughs] That's hilarious.
FS: And what they did was use the computer to take Whitney Houston's voice singing one of her songs and laid it over a song by Kraftwerk. And then the other side has the same thing: a song by Human League, and they put TLC singing on it. It's very interesting.
DE: What label is it on?
FS: It's totally independent. You can only find it in some specialty record stores' like Rough Trade in London or at Other Records in New York.
DE: Do you sell it in your store [called Frederic Sanchez] in Paris?
FS: Yeah. I'm sure this kind of thing will become more common in the future. It's a new way to think of mixing, which is very nice: a collage.
