Presenting a portfolio from the archives of Interview of 4 iconic brits captured live on Red Hot Tape

Interview, Oct, 2004

ROBERT HAYES: I hear the hours you're putting in are--well maybe they're not unheard of in theater.

TWIGGY: In the theater, two weeks before you open, you do these hours.

ROBERT: Does everybody feel good?

TWIGGY: I do.

TOMMY TUNE: We had a real great day in the theater yesterday. But you'll always have that.

TWIGGY: Yeah. Listen, if you weren't scared, there would be something wrong with you. You've got to be scared to go on.

ROBERT: How scared are you?

TWIGGY: I'm scared. But once you get out there--the worst moment for me is just before you go out. A hair's breadth before you actually appear for the first time, you just think, Oh, my God. What am I here for? I should have gone and worked in Woolworth's or something. The first thing I ever did on stage I made the director set me on stage before the curtain went up because I said, "There's no way VII be able to walk on." That way I couldn't get off--I'd have to go through with it. So he did, he set me on stage. I played Cinderella.

TOMMY: When I called you I was so amazed you were ready to have a go--because the last time I called I said, "Twig, would you like to do something on stage because I'm directing?" And you said, "Never. I couldn't possibly. I'd be too afraid."

TWIGGY: People frighten me, but you can bring 10 million cameras in and I'm fine. It's the faces out there that frighten me.

ROBERT: Can you actually see them?

TWIGGY: Actually, by the time they get all the lights going, you can't see. But there are moments, depending on the lights, where you can see the first few rows.

TOMMY: If the spot falls on you directly you really can't.

TWIGGY: Is that the big bright one? I like that best because you can't see a thing. It's lovely. You just look out into dreamland.

ROBERT: You have one child who travels with you?

TWIGGY: Yes. A little girl. She's four. If I can't bring her, I don't do it. I never go anywhere without her.

TOMMY: I gave her tap shoes for Christmas.

TWIGGY: When we get back, I'm going to get her into a class....

ROBERT: Where do you five now?

TWIGGY: We have been living in Los Angeles, but we just moved back to England because of her, but we want to go back as well.... I think the values are all wrong out there. Values in Los Angeles have nothing to do with loyalty and integrity and honesty. It's all based on money, good looks, youth--that's not what life's about.

ROBERT: You're one of the world's most photographed faces. Could you five anonymously in Los Angeles?

TWIGGY: I did. We became hermits out there. We're very antisocial people anyway....

TOMMY: You're not antisocial

TWIGGY: Not with my friends, but I never go to parties and I don't like going to clubs.

ROBERT: How is it for you going around New York?

TOMMY: I love it. What's the point? The point is enjoying it. I meet all sorts of wonderful people.

TWIGGY: I should think people are friendly towards you, actually. In America I can walk around without anyone knowing me. People still think I look like I did twelve years ago. But in England I go out and everyone talks to me.
