The other Michelangelo

Interview, Oct, 1995 by Miuccia Prada

Home, for Michelangelo, has almost always been temporary, a kind of study in which to collect many things.

MP: Tell me something about Antonioni's generosity, which I can see in his films. He is generous toward the young, the bored, toward people searching for love or revolution. What is your personal experience of Antonioni's generosity?

EA: As I said before, I should have realized that the real Michelangelo is on the set, in the films. There is no man more generous than he, in his filmmaking. He's the same in real life, but you have to know how to recognize it, to understand the way he feels.

MP: Does Antonioni have any more dreams?

EA: Michelangelo's dreams are always films. Sometimes he slips off into daydreams, pursuing some idea or creation. He even used to do it while driving, running the risk of ending up in the oncoming lanes.

His dreams seem not to be linked to desire. He dreams for amusement. It's a professional quirk. But the theme of his dreams is always love. That's his sole desire: love.
