Velocity Girl comin' at you - pop band

Interview, June, 1994 by Ray Rogers

Instead of jumping onto the crowded roster of one of the many major labels vying for potential indie-rock crossovers, D.C.-based Velocity Girl have agreed to record their next five albums with Sub Pop, the independent kingpin that believed in them first. Here's the twist: the notoriously low-fi band's production budget increased plentyfold anyway, and their latest release, !Simpatico!, is a masterpiece of over-the-top pop.

"The evidence has always been there that we were trying to make pop records even if they didn't come out that way," says guitarist Archie Moore, who duets with vocalist Sarah Shannon in perfect harmony on several sunny songs. "We mixed the last record ourselves, so it was all just guitars in your face, which made it a lot harder to hear the pop songs underneath."
