Fear mongering - Letters to the Editor - Brief Article - Letter to the Editor

Progressive, The, Jan, 2003 by Kenneth Emerick

A campaign of fear and a timid Democratic response provided Republicans with control of all branches of federal government. Bush sang the threatening songs and led the shouts that pleased the mainstream media and the pundits. As The Progressive noted in "A Time for Boldness" (Comment, December issue), "Bush played the war card ... to shift people's attention away from the economy and Wall Street scandals."

For months, Bush spent his time not at the White House but telling lies on the campaign trail to sell his candidates. A one-sided corporate media gave Bush and his circle massive coverage. Fear won, and we shall all pay.

The campaign of threats and fear promises more corporate benefits and greater power and control in the hands of the warmongers and reactionaries in Washington.
