Poets for war - Letter to the Editor

Progressive, The, June, 2003 by Aaron Goldstein

With great interest I read AnneMarie Cusac's interview with Sam Hamill (April issue). I am not sure what "idiot rightwingers" Hamill is referring to when he claims they complain "about poetry being political." As a conservative Republican, I firmly believe that the act of putting pen to paper is political. However, poetry and language belong to everyone and are not the exclusive purview of leftwing radicals.

Hamill, of course, is entitled to his opinion. But his dour band of pacifists does not speak for all poets. There are those of us who value liberty and freedom in our daily lives and reject totalitarianism in all its forms. It is in that spirit that the website Poets for the War was launched (www.poetsforthewar.org) in February.
