Giving the Ax to Nuclear Subs - Chequamegon National Forest protest - Brief Article

On June 24, Bonnie Urfer and Mike Sprong sawed three nuclear weapons communications towers located in Chequamegon National Forest. The Navy's Project ELF (Extremely Low Frequency), which was knocked off-line for twenty-four hours by the action, sends coded, one-way messages to Trident submarine fleets laden with nuclear missiles. The two were arrested and charged with intentional damage to property. Sprong was released on bond. Urfer is being held in the Ashland County Jail due to previous ELF trespass convictions.
