Progressive, The, August, 2001
Washington, D.C.
On June 10, Libby Marsh of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, protested in front of a mock missile in Lafayette Park across from the White House. Dr. Peter Wilk, past president of Physicians for Social Responsibility, holds up a "Call to Action" petition against President Bush's proposed national missile defense plan. Also, on June 11 and 12, nearly 300 activists from thirty-five states met with 115 Representatives and Senators. The three-day event was sponsored by Project Abolition, a coalition "founded in 1999 to increase public awareness of nuclear danger and build grassroots support in the United States for the reduction and elimination of nuclear weapons," according to its web site.
