As We Are. - periodical reviews

Progressive, The, Sept, 1994

Fed up with slick "Generation X" marketing, Jason Pramas and Charles Provenzano founded As We Are, "a progressive magazine for working young people (not a privileged elite)" that focuses on real people and activists--not Wall Street or Hollywood. The first issue features an essay by Pramas about why the media are so eager to concoct a war between the generations. Pramas's thesis is that business and government are trying to cut Social Security by fostering resentment of the elderly among young adults. After the piece came out, the Gray Panthers named Pramas the youngest member of their national board.

"We know each other through the movement," Pramas says of the writers and editors of As We Are. Pramas himself works for the National Writers Union. Other members of the staff include labor organizers and Green Party activists. "The people you see in the magazine come from serious, industrial towns," Pramas says. "We view our magazine as a net that we cast into communities that the Left does not reach."

In particular, Pramas hopes to reach young people neglected by more established Left magazines and groups--"places that hire only lvy League interns."

A year's subscription to As We Are costs $10. For more information or to subscribe, write to P.O. Box 380048, Cambridge, MA 02139.
