Certain Society Awards Nominations Due March 1, 1999
The 1999 Certain Society Awards Committee will be accepting nominations for five extremely prestigious awards between now and March 1, 1999. Each year at the Membership Meeting of the PSA International Conference, the Society presents these awards to members in recognition of their dedication and extraordinary service to PSA.
A potential recipient may be proposed by any PSA member in good standing who knows the candidate well through close association over a reasonable period of time.
The Certain Society Awards are: John Doscher Memorial Award, PSA Appreciation Award, Victor Scales Memorial Award, Stuyvesant Peabody Award, and the Harold D. Lorimor Memorial Award. Additional information and application forms may be obtained by contacting PSA Headquarters.
John Ooscher Memorial Award
The John Doscher Memorial Award was established in 1981 by Barbara Doscher and Arthur P. Henricks Jr., Hon. PSA, FPSA. The award is presented annually to the PSA member who has made an outstanding contribution to classical photography.
Classical photography pertains to any photographic medium including still life, pictorial, nature and portraiture. The recipient must have mastered the basic crafts (lighting, composition and technique), with knowledge and respect for but not strict adherence to, the rules.
PSA Appreciation Award
The PSA Appreciation award was founded in 1972 by Drs. Samuel and Evelyn Ross, former students of Helen Manzer, FPSA, in recognition of their admiration of her teaching and as a tribute to others who have given freely of their time and talents in the field of teaching.
The major factor is his/her sharing of knowledge with others through extensive lectures, programs and articles, without monetary reward.
Victor Scales Memorial Award
The Victor Scales Memorial Award was initiated in 1962 as a tribute to a man who held many positions in PSA since becoming a member in 1939. The award is presented to a Society member who has provided service to PSA over an extensive period. The chief factor shall be the encouragement to others in the field of more imaginative photography. Organizational work and exhibition records will be considered as supporting material.
Stuyvesant Peabody Memorial Award
The Stuyvesant Peabody Award was donated by Patrick Peabody in memory of his father who furthered pictorial photography in the 1940s. When the original funds were depleted, a new donor posthumously identified as Mary Mallas, FPSA, volunteered to perpetuate this award.
The nominees for this award should have been involved in exhibiting, judging, lecturing, writing, teaching and general leadership in local or regional photographic groups with an eye toward stimulating present and future trends in pictorial photography.
Harold D. Lorimor Memorial Award
Sponsors of this award, begun by the Northwest Zone PSA Chapters, are now Vivian Pfleiderer, FPSA, and Frank Watson.
It recognizes a person who has been a member of PSA for at least five years, but not more than 10 years, who has benefitted the Society to an exceptional degree over a consistent period of time.
Proposals may be made by any PSA member by writing a letter of recommendation, not longer than two pages, to the chairman of the Certain Society Awards Committee by March 1, 1999. The letter shall mention why the candidate is meritorious and include specific details.
