PSA Journal, Jan, 1999
Grace H. Lanctot, FPSA
The passing of Grace H. Lanctot, FPSA, on August 13, 1998, marked also the passing of one of the Seattle Photographic Society Inc.'s strongest PSA supporters. A Life Member, Mrs. Lanctot joined Seattle Photo in October of 1968 and was a strong influence in the club for promotion of the Photographic Society of America. Grace also belonged to Chicago Color Camera Club and continued to be a member until the early 1990s.
Her membership in the Photographic Society of America began in May of 1957, and over a span of 40 years she served in many capacities. She wrote articles for the PSA Journal, beginning in 1978 and earning a Silver Editorial Star in 1988. Her name was often on annual conference and regional convention programs as she shared her photographic knowledge through the programs: "Who Needs Daylight," "Creativity in the Camera," "Color with Care," and "Filter Fun." Several of Grace's recently updated slide programs are part of the Slide Instruction Sets of the Color Slide Division. She had previously chaired the Color Slide Division.
Grace received a certificate from PSA for 41 years of membership and service. An international judge and exhibitor, she earned Five Stars in Nature Division and her First Galaxy in Color Slide Division. Her Associateship of PSA was bestowed in 1967 and her Fellowship in 1974. She was honored with the Victor H. Scales Award in 1982 and Appreciation Award in 1984.
Grace Lanctot was born in a "Finnish dance hall in 1913 on the plains of Northern Alberta where my parents had set up a store and post office" according to her memoirs. She graduated from the University of Alberta, Canada, and taught in rural schools of the province before moving to Chicago. For a part of her life she lectured on photography in the winter and operated a resort in Western Alberta in the summer. She visited all 50 states and 20 countries of the world. She was awarded honorary memberships in some photo organizations including one in India.
PSA will miss Grace H. Lanctot, FPSA.
