PSA Journal, Jan, 2008 by LaVonna Hitz
The new year is upon us and it is time to give thought to the various exhibitions and competitions in the Pictorial Division (PPD) of the Photographic Society of America (PSA), and there are several.
American Portfolios, directed by Richard Collier, APSA, is a very popular activity giving members the chance to meet and enjoy fellowship with other photographers. It also is a great learning medium in that every print you submit will be critiqued by every member of the Study Group to which you are assigned. There is also a commentator who is well versed in the composition and making of a successful print. Contact Richard by e-mail at dickcoll@aol.com.
Portrait Portfolios, directed by Sally Grugan, FPSA is another popular activity, which also gives members opportunities for making new friends. There are several different categories in this section that will appeal to many. There is a children's portrait portfolio (PF), a color portrait PF, general portraiture, one for animals, another for glamour girl, and figure study. For more information on any of these PF's you may contact Sally at rags8@earthlink.net
Canadian Portfolios, director John Pickard. This group is obviously for Canadian entries. Postage costs make it impractical for mailing into Canada. The group is handled very much like the American Portfolios or the Portrait Portfolios. For information pertaining to the Canadian PF's you may contact jpickard@sunwave.net.
European Portfolios, director, Andre Tortes. Once more, this group is most specifically for those in the European membership due to postage costs. However, for additional information please contact Andre at atorres@ wanadoo.fr.
Last, but of great importance is the Print of the Month (POM), which is an ongoing competition. You do pay a small annual fee to belong to this group and then each month two prints are submitted. Your prints will be placed according to your photographic experience which is classified as general monochrome, star monochrome, general color and star color. There is a different judge each month. First, second, third and honorable mentions are awarded in each category. The overall winner designated, as "Print of the Month" will appear in the PSA Journal. POM is a very popular activity. For more information you may contact the director, Joseph Hearst, APSA, at joe@hearst.com.
This is all the Pictorial Division information we have room to print this month. Please watch for next month's issue of the PSA Journal and we will describe more available activities existing for the membership. Check all of this out on our web page at www.psa-photo.org, click on Divisions, then click Pictorial Print Division for more information on each above-mentioned competition.
