BULLETIN EDITORS: Club newsletter readers want timely information they can find quickly and read easily. Readability studies have shown that they look first at the front page, then the back page and finally at the inside pages. A well-organized layout with attractive design features will capture their attention and guide them to whatever information they seek. Unpretentious, simple, but lively writing will keep them reading.
Other points to consider for maintaining good readability are these:
* Place your most important features on the front page if possible.
* A brief subject index on page one can quickly direct readers to other pages.
* Readers appreciate jump-to lines which help them quickly locate material continued on other pages.
* Calendars should have eye appeal, conserve space and appear in the same spot each issue.
* Every photograph should be captioned.
* Design competition score reports to be compact yet easy to decipher.
* Use active voice, short words and present tense in headlines. Don't crowd heads with text directly above or below them.
* Use appropriate clip art only to enhance written material. Avoid filling trapped white space with meaningless graphics.
* Place photographs in balanced arrangements so they guide readers around a page without obstructing the text.
The key to having an effective club newsletter is to keep it easy to read.
