International News Notes - photography - Brief Article

PSA Journal, July, 2000 by Amy McMillan

INDIA

India, a country of varied interests, attracts people from all walks of life from around the world. Members of PSA from various countries visit India in large number and reap a good harvest for salon participation. It was a great pleasure for IIPC members to welcome Kathy Moyd, APSA, USA, Francis Javier Labarga, Spain and President of the Chattagram Photographic Society, M.T. Islam with his fellow photographers from Bangladesh. During their stay at Delhi, we had an opportunity to discuss photography and matters of mutual interest.

Ms. Moyd, Director, of Who's Who for the Photo Travel Division, is a regular salon participant. Prior to her flight to India, we were happy to be of help in organizing her trip. She brought with her a portfolio of her travel slides, which were highly appreciated by the local members of PSA and IIPC.

Mr. Labarga of Spain is one of the top monochrome print exhibitors and an avowed traveler. To hunt with camera, he goes to many countries. India, he says, is one of his favorites. This was his third visit. We are sure he must have taken back a load of exposed black and white films to produce new eye-catching photographs of a large variety of subjects from this part of the world. We hope to see his new monochromes in salons.

Dr. Islam of Bangladesh is a well-known professional photographer and runs a well-equipped studio at Chittagong. Though a professional, he is an amateur at heart.

For IIPC members, Dr. Islam is one of the most familiar faces from across the border. He is a well wisher of IIPC and a strong supporter of its policies for the advancement of photographic art and science. When visiting India, he is accompanied by several of his colleagues and students. This doubles our pleasure to exchange views, see their work and show our work to them.

SOUTH AFRICA

The Photographic Society of Southern Africa (PSSA) holds an annual congress, which runs for a week and includes lectures, outings and workshops. Each year a different club hosts the congress in their home town and offers something unique to our members.

The 2001 Congress will be hosted by the Van der Bijl Park Camera Club from October 15 to 20 in Vereeniging. This town is about 75 kilometers from Johannesburg, so allows us the benefit of enjoying the Reef hospitality and scenery without any of the problems associated with big city life. The theme of the congress will be "The Vaal Triangle for Water and Industry."

The organizing committee endeavors to present as well-rounded a program as possible and obviously likes to invite international speakers to present lectures. The main stumbling block, however, with our declining Rand, is that of finance and therefore they are not in a position to offer sponsorship in terms of an air ticket. What we are looking for, therefore, is someone who was planning or thinking about a trip to South Africa who would be willing to tie it in with our congress.

We can offer free board and accommodation for the week of congress for which we would ask in return, two lectures of between 30 and 45 minutes each in length. We can also possibly arrange for accommodation in other areas and will discuss this further with any interested persons.

Our requirements are for a well-established photographer who can present two good illustrated lectures in English. We are happy to consider any subject matter and medium, but of particular interest to our members in that area would be someone who works in both the traditional darkroom and in digital. Of course, success on the Who's Who would also be a drawing card for our members. If you feel able to assist or know of anyone who can, please contact me as soon as possible so that we can organize something for our mutual benefit.
