PSA Journal, July, 2002 by Ellen M. Worzala
Eight years ... and growing! The PSA Wisconsin Chapter has presented its Eighth Annual Youth Photography Showcase.
Seventy-five photographs were exhibited for two weeks in the Rotunda of the Milwaukee City Hall. Each year the quality of the photographs has improved, and this year was no exception. Most photographs were black and white with color prints becoming more evident. While the art/photography classes continue to stress learning the basics with standard cameras, one participating student's school did not offer classes in photography. That student, Anne Lauer, was instructed by her grandfather, Robert Lauer, Sr., APSA.
Participation started with the sponsors, the PSA Wisconsin Chapter and the Milwaukee Public School system. Participation has been expanded to include students in some of Milwaukee's private schools. Chapter members, teachers, and school administrators cooperated to bring the "Life in My City" exhibit together. Award winning students and many of the exhibitors and family members (including grandparents), teachers, friends, and school administrators attended the reception and awards ceremony.
The ceremony began the with Alderman Mike D'Amato welcoming the the group to City Hall. He praised the students and their accomplishments and thanked the parents for their cooperation and support of their sons' and daughters' photographic endeavors.
The highlight of the evening was the awarding of honors--a certificate and $100.00 to the Award of Merit photographers and a certificate and $50.00 to the Honorable Mention photographers.
Following this exhibit, the photographs will be displayed at the Central Office of the Milwaukee Public School system. Prints will also be chosen to be entered in the Society's Outstanding Photographs from Young Photographers competition and displayed at the PSA Annual International Conference in Pittsburgh, PA.
